There are different levels in the depths of the heart, a first and superficial one, and a deeper level: the level of the soul. Then will start the journey of the soul through various points, the chakras, in the naqshbandi tradition as well as in the Sahaj Marg tradition.<\/p>\n<p>The first stage of the heart region involves the five elements we are made of. Purifying that area completely is what concerns what we are at the time of our incarnation. Our practice is there to help us doing it: maintain a good mental balance and keep control over our emotions so that they may not overwhelm us when we are meditating, contemplating God or offering a prayer to God. The siren voices for earth, water, fire, air and ether can no longer gain a grip on the soul\u2019s being, which has been \u2018liberated\u2019 (<em>jivan-mukti<\/em>), but that is only the beginning of the way to be travelled.<\/p>\n<p>Theo. \u2013 To my understanding, the first stage of liberation consists in the soul being liberated from the karmic effects of samskaras and from having to be reborn.<\/p>\n<p>The Elder \u2013 Exactly! When at the second stage, man keeps thinking of liberating God, who is within him. I thought the ego concerned the region of manifestation and of the elements it is made of. Any releasable yogi has already crossed the first star. So why should the ego still be active, let alone detrimental?
