Parents will provide all the care and food appropriate for the child’s age and maturity.

Theo. – So, our first steps in the Sahaj Marg practice are some sort of an aspirant’s primary education, aren’t they?

The Elder – Actually, right from the beginning, we encourage people to read their inner conditions so that they may directly witness their own evolution, their transformation.

Theo. – Is it the reason why, after a group meditation, you ask the participants to become aware of the vibration present in their inner space and of the way it permeates all their cells and their environment?

The Elder – Absolutely! Through meditation, we turn our attention from outside inside. It is appropriate to observe what is happening there. Constant remembrance helps to develop an awareness of the flow that is poured into the aspirant’s heart and to enhance its presence within.

Theo. It’s easy enough, after meditation, but most of the time it seems to be a remote feeling, deadened by the noise our thoughts and emotions can make as we are constantly caring for our selves and our daily issues. Then we can easily lose that sweet inner vibration.

The Elder – That is why we incite the aspirant to observe silence first, then silence within silence. Therefore, it is important to pay attention, and to remain alert and discriminative. That will allow us to get connected, willingly and permanently, with the vibratory field of our heart and to intensify its vibration.

Theo. – Could you describe that state, please?

The Elder – It is somehow like a basso continuo in music, you know, the ground bass that is played continuously throughout a piece to serve as the foundation for whatever melodic variations composed above it.

Theo. – Do you mean that the melody that is being played is our life, and that the ground bass we can hear is the Divine? Is that what we have to try and discover?

The Elder – It is all there already, present to all eternity, but we never pay attention. Our noisy lives will obscure that sweet music.

Theo. – Hence the necessity for us to be alert and conscious.

The Elder – Some people think, for instance, that the short inner meditative breaks they take during the day will refresh them. In fact, they are just harmonizing their selves with the permanent flow of the divine vibration, and it makes them feel they are re-connected and refreshed.

Theo (pensively):
– It is so subtle that the slightest noise will stifle the sound…

The Elder – It does not mean that the sound is not there, though; it’s only that it is no longer a sound that human ears can hear.

Theo. – Hence your inviting us to inner silence and discrimination. How can we make significant advances on that front, without regressing?

The Elder – You have to ensure that each dimension you have discovered is being explored properly, and that you’ve made it yours and integrated it, while remaining connected with the constant channel that is uttering the sound, the vital vibration, the sacred OM.

Theo. – Does it concern every single dimension?

The Elder – Each one of them is a fascinating world. We could spend a whole life being in a state of wonder. Yet, that continuous flow will carry us forward. We do have to make it ours, consciously ours, willingly ours, so that it may carry us far away, to God’s Infinity.

Theo. – So, during the half-hour we are meditating on the divine light within our hearts, we are immersed within that flow, that famous Channel….

The Elder – We are getting nearer and nearer to it. If thoughts start spurting out, they will disturb us only if we follow and maintain them.

Theo. – In other words, they are the ones that should become the ground sound, or rather the surface one, whereas the divine sound plays the leading note and gathers momentum.

The Elder – Until you are carried away.

Theo. – And then?

The Elder – That is what we call samadhi, the state where we are bathing into the divine flow and rejoin the Infinite Source.

Theo. – I had a taste of it, on some occasions, but it would not last long. When I surfaced again, the deep feeling I’d had burst like a soap bubble, as if the earth’s attraction would reclaim its rights. It was really frustrating, but what should I do?

The Elder – You should come up to the surface very quietly, detach a part of your consciousness and order it to keep in touch with that depth and simply accompany it, being in His presence.

Theo. – I can imagine my brain should be able to do so, thanks to its two parts, its three levels and its multiple autonomous operating areas, but still…

The Elder – The brain will follow and adapt to the state the subtle body and your consciousness will then develop. Since it is very flexible, though still at a very early stage, it is for us to train it. The neuronal and synaptic connections will develop accordingly.

Theo. – How?

The Elder – We have already talked about the SQ (spiritual quotient). It will have a major impact on human beings, on their brains and their evolution, but I can look further. Today, I want to talk about the divine quotient, DQ. It will allow humanity to make a big jump in its evolution. We are currently nearer to Primitive man than to an accomplished human being. Our real capacities still remain dormant. Today’s proposition is to go back straight to the central divine flow and remain there, undisturbed by anything that might impede our capacity to dwell in God.

Theo. – How can we do that?

The Elder – That major flow is also the one that bore the Creation. It is endowed with an infinite energy. What I suggest is to let the Divine operate within us and then see what humanity is capable of… Seeing an awakened humanity will be something incredible, fantastic…

Theo. – You usually say that things should not be approached the wrong way round, and now you have already reached the goal!

The Elder (enthusiastic and smiling)
– You are right. Constant Remembrance is what will help us in our daily work without letting the deepest part of our Being be disturbed. That will be a good start for humanity, won’t it?

To be continued…

Theophile the Elder
An excerpt from Dialogs with Theophile the Elder
Theophile the Younger’s Initiation

Theo. – It is a relentless job… The Elder – It can be compared with the constant attention a mother or a father pays to their dear child.
